Beard Up and Man Up!

Friday 9 October 2015

Male Uprising Guernsey is looking for '500 good men' to take part in a Guernsey 'beard-off' this November. The charity is encouraging men to grow a beard and help raise £40,000 to purchase a piece of high-tech equipment that will enable Template Prostatic Biopsies to be performed on island.

Get Growing

Registration to take part in the beard-off is £20.00 and it's hoped that each of the 500 bearded wonders will raise sponsorship money as well. The stubbly challenge will take place this November and all islanders are being encouraged to support their local growers, helping to ensure that the money raised has tangible benefits for the men in our community.

Help Buy New Medical Equipment

'The money raised by Male Uprising Guernsey's Beard Up and Man Up campaign will contribute to the purchase of the specialist equipment we need to perform Template Prostatic Biopsies on island,' explains Owen Cole, MSG Consultant Urologist and MUG Council member.

'The Template Biopsy technique has been developed in order to provide more accurate and extensive sampling of the whole prostate where cancer is suspected. Template biopsies may be recommended in certain medical circumstances and currently men are sent to Southampton for their biopsies. Unfortunately the wait for this is about five months and men have to stay overnight for the procedure.'

Mr Cole continues: 'Prostate cancer is the most common male cancer in Guernsey and this equipment, together with the specialist oncology nurse, also supported by MUG, will make a real difference to patients here in Guernsey.'

Beard Up and Man Up!

'We need 500 good men of Guernsey. It's time to beard up and man up,' says Male Uprising Guernsey founder, Trevor Kelham. 'But don't be limited to a chin warmer or chinstrap, get creative with mutton-chops, sideburns or a goatee. We hope to see 500 islanders stop shaving for the month of November and keep it local. Remember, if you are facially folically challenged you can always sponsor a friend.'

Growers will be encouraged to post their pictures on the Male Uprising Guernsey Facebook page throughout the month and the charity has devised a competitive element to add to the fun.

The Fermain Valley Hotel, one of Guernsey's most luxurious four-star hotels, has stepped in to help encourage more sponsorship. Anyone who raises over £200.00 must post their picture on the MUG Facebook page. Tim Coates of the Fermain Valley Hotel, Owen Cole and Trevor Kelham will judge entrants to find the MUG Beard of the Year Award.

The winning whiskers will be rewarded with a beard trim and man's hair cut at Manzur and an overnight stay for two at the Fermain Valley Hotel. The generous prize includes a glass of Prosecco on arrival, £50 dining credit which can be used in either Ocean or The Rock Garden Steakhouse and breakfast for two the following morning.

'Thank you to both Manzur and Fermain Valley Hotel for contributing the prizes. We'll be looking at bushiness, creativity and all-round "real man" factor to find our local growing champion,' explains Mr Kelham. 'It's time to beard up; the money we raise stays on the island to benefit local men. Grow local, support local!'
