THANK YOU GUERNSEY!
Tuesday 1 December 2015
Just over a decade ago my then six-year-old daughter received an end-of-year note from her form teacher advising her to "Shoot for the moon! Even if you miss you will land amongst the stars!" Good advice.
Well I can safely say that Guernsey has over 300 "stars" and collectively they have raised over £33,000.00 (and rising) which will contribute to the purchase of Guernsey's own Template Prostatic Biopsy machine.
At present these specialist biopsies are carried out off-island with an estimated waiting time of five months for non-private paitents. This is a significant period of time to a patient and their family and friends, waiting for news as to the seriousness and extent of their condition. Imagine the mind games, stress and anxiety that build up day after day, night after night over this period of time.
As they say, knowledge is power. How much easier and more convenient would it be for the Bailiwick of Guernsey males to have such a machine on-island with the waiting time drastically reduced as a result?
The "Beard Up" campaign conducted by Male Uprising Guernsey during the month of November was an attempt to "support local growers" and encouraged me to pay forward in terms in investing in its fight against prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is the most common male cancer in the Bailiwick.
Since its inception Male Uprising Guernsey has been humbled by the support and generosity of this island.
During November we saw sixth form students, school teachers, headmasters, fishermen, construction workers, electricians, finance workers, lawyers, insurance brokers, accountants, airport staff, emergency services personnel, police officers, sportsmen, opticians, postmen, milkmen and many, many more support the campaign.
Those who took part spanned the age spectrum of the Bailiwick - grandfathers, fathers, uncles, nephews, sons, brothers, teammates, friends and damily have all collaborated to raise this significant sum of money.
The good men of Alderney, Herm, Sark and Guernsey have united, ensuring that MUG gathers momentum day after day. Awareness, knowledge and education were increased dramatically, all based on the premise that the earlier the detection and intervention taken, the greater the chance of success and ultimate survival if anything erroneous is discovered.
We are proud of our mindset movement and the courageous stand which the male population is now taking in their desire to ultimately defeat the bully that is cancer.
On behalf of everyone that is involved in Male Uprising Guernsey, I thank the Guernsey community and the Guernsey media for their sensational support.
