MUG Extends Support for Local Nurses with Increased £6,000 Annual Bursary

Nurses will have the opportunity to receive additional cancer treatment training with the help of an extended five-year bursary from Male Uprising Guernsey.

We are pleased to announce an increase and extension of our commitment to local
healthcare excellence through the MUG Nurses Bursary.

The MUG Council has agreed to a new five-year bursary, increasing the annual grant to
£6,000 per year.

This increase both reflects the rising costs of specialist education and follows a clear
demonstration of the bursary's direct value to the Island's health services thanks to regular
reports from Lead Cancer Nurse Lucy Coggan.

Sara De La Rue, Clinical Nurse Specialist Uro-Oncology, and a bursary recipient, said that,
‘Specialist training, particularly relating to specific cancers, often requires nurses to travel to
the UK which can be expensive. While the States are fantastic in supporting us with study
leave, the bursary helps us travel off-island to bring the latest specialist knowledge which
directly benefits the patients we look after.

“As well as training, we’re also able to gain expertise from interacting with other industry
professionals which we can bring back to Guernsey.”

Owen Cole, MUG Council Member and Consultant Urological Surgeon, emphasised that, ‘It
is vital that our supporters see exactly where their hard-earned donations are going. Through
detailed reporting from the lead nursing team, we can see the direct impact this bursary has
on our island’s healthcare. By increasing this grant to £6,000, we hope to ensure that the
cost of off-island education is never a barrier to providing the highest quality care for patients
right here in Guernsey.”

Since its inception, the rolling bursary has already benefited approximately 22 local nurses.

The initiative aims to make professional development as accessible as possible, ensuring
Guernsey’s cancer services remain future-proofed.
